French Polynesia's planned presidential election has been put off until later this week amid uncertainty over what it takes to have a valid outcome.

Three candidates put their names forward after last month's ousting of Gaston Tong Sang who was the fourth leader to lose a no confidence vote in less than three years.

This comes as the French government is determined to organise fresh general elections as soon as possible.

The opposition led by Oscar Temaru wanted to oust the government after alleging in it motion of no confidence that Mr Tong Sang was a pathological liar.

But when the assembly was convened, out the 57 members only 30 were present, that is five short of the quorum for a valid vote.

Myron Mataoa of the opposition Union For Democracy says his side stayed away because it is unclear if they can elect a president if none of the candidates wins an absolute majority of 29 votes.

An assessment is due from France on whether 27 votes will suffice.

None of the three candidates - Oscar Temaru Edouard Fritch and Gaston Tong Sang - seems likely to get the support of 29 assembly members.

Gaston Flosse, whose party commands the second largest number of assembly members, told local radio that he won't join a government led by a pro-independence politician, a reference to Mr Temaru.

Amid the latest political stand-off, one man still claims to be president as a result of the turmoil of 2004.

Rene Hoffer says his claim has not been nullified by any court ruling.

FR POLY HOFFER PRES : "I am the president of that crazy thing called "French Polynesia", which is actually the Kingdom of TAHITI and it's Dependances exactly, where France is occupant with no right and no title for over 160 years."

His assertions of the absence of French rights to the islands is backed by heirs to the Tahitian monarchy.

But in the confused political situation in Papeete of recent weeks, the pro-independence opposition party admits that France may end up running the government.

Another attempt to elect a president, albeit for only a few weeks, is to be made before the end of the week.

And it's already estimated that the fall of the Tong Sang government has cost the taxpayer 5 million US dollars.
